How to Price 3D Prints: The Ultimate 3D Printing Pricing Guide

Pricing a 3D print shouldn't be guesswork. If you price too low, you're donating electricity and machine time. If you price too high, your print queue sits empty. This guide breaks down the exact math behind professional job costing so you can quote with confidence.

1. The Basic Pricing Formula

Job costing relies on a structured formula that accounts for raw materials, machine wear, labor, setup, and profit margins:

2. Calculating Material Costs

Material cost is the dry weight of the model plus waste, multiplied by your cost per gram. Always account for two factors:

  • Purge & Support Waste: Brims, support structures, and skirt lines consume real filament. Slicers only show model weight. Add a flat 10% waste factor to your estimates.
  • Material Multipliers: Standard PLA is easy to print. Materials like TPU, ABS, or carbon-fiber composites require hardened steel nozzles, higher bed temperatures, and slower print speeds. Apply a 1.3x to 2.0x premium multiplier to cover nozzle wear and slow throughput.

3. Machine Time Cost

Your machine is depreciating every hour it runs. An hourly rate covers power draw (typically 100W–300W), replacement parts (nozzles, belts, thermistors), and machine depreciation.

  • Typical Rates: ₹30 to ₹100 ($0.50 to $1.50 USD) per hour is the standard for desktop FDM printers (Bambu P1/X1, Prusa MK4, Ender 3).
  • High-Speed Offset: High-speed CoreXY machines print faster, reducing print time. Keep your hourly rate steady but profit from the increased daily plate output.

4. Setup Fees & Batch Runs

Setup labor is the time you spend prepping files, cleaning the build plate, applying adhesive, and harvesting parts.

  • Flat Setup Fee: Always charge a flat fee per build plate (typically ₹20–₹50). This protects your margins on small, cheap prints where material cost is negligible.
