3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) is an open-source, XML-based 3D file specification designed by the 3MF Consortium to package 3D geometry, colors, materials, multi-part plate layouts, and printer slicing configurations into a single compressed ZIP archive.

Why 3MF is Replacing STL

Traditional STL files only store raw triangular surface meshes without color, units, or print orientation. 3MF files retain precise mesh vertex integrity, manifold geometry, unit scaling (millimeters), filament type assignments, and slicer modifier meshes without data loss.

3MF in MakerWorld & Bambu Studio

Modern platforms like MakerWorld and Bambu Studio use 3MF as their standard print profile format. A single 3MF project can contain multiple plates, specific AMS multi-color color assignments, support settings, and exact print time predictions.

Cost Estimating with 3MF

Because 3MF files embed slicer metadata (like slice_info.config and plate G-code), cost calculators can parse exact filament weights and print durations per plate without needing to run heuristic slicing engines.
