Multi-color 3D printing is the process of creating multi-colored physical objects in a single print run using automated filament switching systems (like the Bambu AMS or Prusa MMU), multi-nozzle tool changers, or IDEX dual extruders.

Filament Purging & Prime Towers

Single-nozzle multi-color systems must flush the previous filament color out of the hotend before extruding the new color. Slicers generate a prime tower on the build plate to stabilize nozzle chamber pressure after every color swap.

Minimizing Purge Waste

Techniques to reduce filament waste include Flush into Infill (purging transition colors into internal hidden spaces), Flush into Objects (printing a secondary sacrificial model), and optimizing color distribution across layers.

Quoting Multi-Color Print Jobs

Because every filament swap adds 40–90 seconds and 0.5g–2g of purge waste, multi-color prints take significantly longer and consume more material than single-color jobs. Cost estimators apply per-color fee multipliers to cover this overhead.
