Definition

A hotend is the high-temperature subassembly on an FDM 3D printer responsible for heating, melting, and dispensing solid filament. It consists of a heat sink, heat break, heater block with ceramic/cartridge heater, thermistor temperature sensor, and nozzle.

Hotend Anatomy & Thermal Zones

A hotend is divided into a cold zone (heat sink actively cooled by a fan) and a hot zone (heater block and nozzle). The heat break isolates these zones to prevent "heat creep" — premature filament melting that causes severe extruder clogs.

All-Metal vs PTFE-Lined Hotends

All-metal hotends (made from titanium or bi-metal alloys) can safely reach temperatures up to 300°C+, enabling high-temp materials like ABS, Nylon, and Polycarbonate. PTFE-lined hotends are limited to ~240°C for safe PLA and PETG printing.

Modern high-speed printers like Bambu Lab utilize extended melt-zone ceramic hotends capable of volumetric flow rates exceeding 30 mm³/s, dramatically reducing print times and production costs.
