3D printing (also called additive manufacturing) is a manufacturing technology that fabricates three-dimensional physical parts by depositing or solidifying material in successive thin horizontal cross-sections (layers) directly from digital 3D models.

How 3D Printing Works

A 3D model is designed in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software or downloaded as an STL or 3MF file. A slicer then translates the geometry into G-code instructions. The 3D printer reads these commands and deposits melted PLA, PETG, or photopolymer resin layer upon layer until the finished physical object is complete.

Major 3D Printing Technologies

The two most common consumer and prototyping technologies are FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling), which uses thermoplastic filament spools, and Resin 3D Printing (SLA/MSLA), which cures liquid photopolymer resins with UV light for high-precision figurines and dental models.
