TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) is an elastomeric thermoplastic polymer with rubber-like elasticity, high tear strength, excellent abrasion resistance, and chemical durability. It is designated by Shore Hardness ratings (e.g. 95A for semi-rigid, 85A for ultra-flexible).

Printing Requirements for Flexible Filament

Because TPU is elastic like a rubber band, it can buckle inside Bowden tubes. It prints best on direct-drive extruders at slow speeds (15–35 mm/s), with disabled retraction, a hotend temperature of 210°C–230°C, and an unheated or lightly warmed bed (40°C–50°C).

Key Applications

TPU is widely used for functional shock absorbers, drone bumpers, customized phone cases, automotive seals, wearable watch bands, and ergonomic tool grips.

Pricing Flexible Print Jobs

Due to slow print speeds (increasing machine hours) and specialized handling requirements, print shops typically apply a 1.5x to 2.0x pricing multiplier for TPU compared to standard PLA.
