How to Clean 3D Printer Extruder Gears & Clear Filament Dust
As filament is pushed into the 3D Printing Glossary">hotend, extruder gear teeth shave off micro-particles of plastic. When gear grooves become packed with plastic dust, the teeth lose grip on the filament, resulting in under-extrusion and skipped layers.
Recommended Substance:
Compressed Air / Air Blower, Brass Wire Brush & Tweezers
Never Use:
Solvents inside motor bearings • Lubricant on gear teeth (causes slipping)
Step-by-Step Procedure

1. Cool Hotend & Open Extruder
Ensure 3D Printing Glossary">hotend temperature is below 50°C. Loosen the extruder tension lever or remove the front maintenance cover.

2. Brush Gear Teeth
Use a small brass wire brush or tweezers to pick out packed filament shavings from between the hardened steel gear teeth.

3. Blow Clear with Air
Use compressed air or a rubber blower bulb to blast loose plastic dust out of the 3D Printing Glossary">extruder housing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I lubricate extruder drive gear teeth?
NO. The gear teeth that contact filament must remain completely dry and grease-free. Only the internal needle bearings or reduction gears should receive grease.
