How to Grease 3D Printer Z-Axis Lead Screws (PTFE vs Lithium)
3D Printing Glossary">Z-axis lead screws support the full weight of the X-gantry or build platform. Because they are mounted vertically, thin oils run down and drip off. High-viscosity PTFE or Lithium grease clings to the thread grooves, ensuring smooth, silent micro-stepping.
Recommended Substance:
Super Lube 21030 (Synthetic PTFE Grease) or White Lithium Grease
Never Use:
Thin Spray Oils (Drips down) • WD-40 • Engine Oil
Step-by-Step Procedure

1. Wipe Off Old Dirty Grease
Use a clean rag or paper towel to wipe away old, blackened grease and metal filings from the entire length of the vertical threaded rod.

2. Apply Fresh Grease
Apply a continuous thin bead of PTFE or Lithium grease along the middle and lower working section of the 3D Printing Glossary">lead screw.

3. Cycle Z Axis from Top to Bottom
Power on the machine and use the control screen to jog the Z axis through its full vertical height 2-3 times to spread grease into the brass nut.

A light, even film is ideal. Excess grease will squeeze out of the brass nut and collect dust.
