Definition

Layer height (also referred to as Z-resolution or slice thickness) is the vertical distance the nozzle moves upward between successive horizontal layers of extruded plastic, typically ranging from 0.08mm (fine detail) to 0.28mm (draft speed) for a 0.4mm nozzle.

Resolution vs Print Duration Trade-Off

Layer height is the single largest determinant of print speed. Halving the layer height (e.g. from 0.20mm to 0.10mm) doubles the total number of layers required to build the object, approximately doubling the overall print time.

Visual Aesthetics & Stepping Effect

Thinner layer heights minimize the visible "staircase effect" on curved or sloping top surfaces, yielding smooth, injection-mold-like finishes ideal for detailed miniatures, consumer decor, and jewelry.
