Moisture contamination occurs when hygroscopic 3D printing filaments absorb ambient water molecules from the air. When fed into a heated hotend, this trapped water rapidly vaporizes into micro-steam bubbles that cause popping noises, extrusion voids, severe oozing, and fragile brittle parts.

Technical filaments like PETG, TPU, and Nylon are highly hygroscopic, absorbing water within hours of ambient exposure. Even standard PLA becomes brittle and snaps easily when saturated.
Identifying Wet Filament Symptoms
Key indicators of wet filament include audible crackling/popping sounds at the nozzle tip, severe cobweb stringing during travel moves, rough foamy surface finishes, and weak layer delamination.
Drying Temperatures & Storage Protocols
Restoring wet filament requires baking spools in a dedicated filament dryer (e.g. 45°C–50°C for PLA, 60°C–65°C for PETG/TPU, 70°C–80°C for Nylon) for 6 to 12 hours before storing them in sealed dry boxes with fresh desiccant.
