Why Your 3D Printing Hourly Rate Matters
Every hour your printer runs costs money — electricity, hardware degradation, consumable wear, and time. If your customer-facing hourly rate doesn't cover these real costs, you are subsidising every single print job.
This guide teaches you how to calculate the true 3D printing cost per hour for your specific machine, not just a rule-of-thumb number copied from the internet.
The Machine Rate Formula
Your machine hourly rate (also called the machine cost rate or printer hourly rate) has three primary components:
Machine Rate = Depreciation Rate + Electricity Rate + Consumable Rate + Overhead Rate
1. Depreciation Rate
Depreciation converts the one-time cost of your printer into a per-hour running cost.
Depreciation Rate = (Machine Purchase Price + Setup Cost) / Expected Print Hours

2. Electricity Rate
Most FDM printers draw 80–200W during active printing. Bed heating draws the most power; the motion system and hotend draw relatively little.
Electricity Rate = (Average Power Draw in kW) × (Your kWh Rate)

Check your electricity bill for your actual kWh rate. Rates vary from ₹4/kWh (subsidised residential) to ₹14/kWh (commercial tariff) in India.
3. Consumable Wear Rate
Consumables that wear with use include:
- Nozzles: Brass nozzles last 300–500 hours; hardened steel nozzles last 1,000–3,000 hours
- PEI build plates: 500–1,500 hours depending on materials
- PTFE tubing / Bowden tubes: 200–500 hours
- Belts and pulleys: 1,500–3,000 hours
For a rough figure, ₹5–₹15/hr covers consumable wear on most consumer FDM machines. Higher for abrasive materials (CF, GF) which consume nozzles rapidly.
4. Overhead Rate
Overhead covers indirect costs:
- Space: The floor area your printer occupies (allocated monthly rent or cost)
- Cooling/ventilation: Extract fan electricity, filter consumables
- Network/remote monitoring: Obico or Bambu Cloud subscription costs
- Insurance (for commercial operations)
For home operations, ₹5–₹15/hr is a reasonable overhead allocation. Commercial print farms with dedicated space should calculate actual allocated cost per machine.

Setup: Bambu Lab X1C with AMS, used 8 hrs/day in a home studio

To achieve a 30% profit margin on machine time, the customer-facing hourly rate should be:
Customer Rate = ₹40.20 / (1 - 0.30) = ₹57.43/hr
Rounding to ₹60/hr is a clean, defensible customer-facing machine rate for this setup. The X1C's high speed (500mm/s capability) means it completes more parts per hour than slower machines — your effective per-part machine cost is lower than a slower printer charging the same hourly rate.
How Print Speed Changes the Equation
High-speed printers like the Bambu Lab X1C or P1S are expensive per hour but produce more volume per hour. The true measure of efficiency is machine cost per gram printed, not machine cost per hour.
Cost per gram = Machine Rate per hour / (Average grams printed per hour)
A standard FDM printer at 100mm/s might print 15–25g/hr. A high-speed printer at 300–500mm/s can print 40–80g/hr. At the same hourly rate, the high-speed machine costs half as much per gram produced — which matters a lot for high-volume print farm economics.
