Vase Mode (or Spiralize Outer Contour) is a slicing algorithm that translates a solid 3D CAD model into a continuous, seamless single-wall perimeter by continuously raising the Z-axis in a smooth helical spiral rather than stepping up layer by layer.
Continuous Spiral Printing Mechanics
In Vase Mode, the printer deposits a flat solid base (e.g. 3–5 solid bottom layers) and then smoothly raises the Z-axis in an unbroken upward helix while extruding a single perimeter wall, eliminating retract pauses and the visible Z-seam entirely.
Ideal Geometry: Planters, Lampshades & Decorative Vessels
Vase mode requires solid, non-branching CAD models. It is widely used for decorative vases, organic lampshades, plant pots, and hollow architectural prototypes, reducing print durations from hours to minutes.
Using Wide Line Widths for Watertight Strength
To make single-wall prints sturdy and watertight, makers often pair a 0.6mm or 0.8mm nozzle with an exaggerated slicer line width (e.g. 0.8mm–1.0mm) to produce thick, rigid outer shells.
