Definition

The Z-seam is the visible vertical line, column of dots, or ridge that appears on the exterior surface of an FDM 3D print at the start and end coordinates of the outer perimeter loop on each consecutive layer.

Why the Z-Seam Forms

When the nozzle finishes extruding a layer perimeter and retracts to step up to the next layer, the momentary pause and pressure change leaves a tiny surface irregularity. Across hundreds of layers, these start points create a noticeable seam.

Slicer Seam Placement Strategies

Slicers provide multiple seam alignment algorithms: Aligned / Sharpest Corner (hides the seam inside sharp geometry corners), Rear (places the seam on the back of the part), Random (scatters start points across the model to avoid a single seam line), and modern Scarf Joint Seams (overlaps outer perimeters with a sloping ramp to create near-invisible seams).
