In 3D printing, tolerance refers to the allowable deviation from nominal CAD dimensions, while clearance is the intentional gap designed between mating components to allow smooth mechanical articulation, press-fits, or print-in-place mechanisms without fusing.

FDM Clearance Rules & Guidelines

For well-tuned desktop FDM printers, a design clearance gap of 0.3mm to 0.4mm is standard for smooth print-in-place moving joints and hinges. Tight friction snap-fits require 0.15mm to 0.2mm, while sloppy sliding rails use 0.5mm+.
