Elephant’s foot is a dimensional printing flaw characterized by a flared, bulging base around the first few printed layers caused by the combination of nozzle downward pressure, low initial layer Z-offset, and high bed temperature keeping the bottom plastic semi-molten.

Root Causes of Bottom Layer Bulging

When the nozzle is positioned too close to the build plate during the first layer (excessive initial squish) or when the heated bed temperature is set above the material’s glass transition point, the weight of successive layers pushes the molten bottom outward.

Slicer Mitigations: Initial Layer Compensation

Modern slicers provide dedicated compensation settings—such as Initial Layer Horizontal Expansion (e.g. -0.15 mm to -0.3 mm) or Elephant Foot Compensation—to automatically inset the first layer geometry and ensure straight vertical walls.

Hardware Bed Leveling & Thermal Calibration

Accurately dialing in the automatic Z-offset and lowering the bed temperature after the first layer ensures high bed adhesion without unsightly dimensional flaring.
