Overhangs & Bridging
Overhangs refer to geometric features extending outward at angles greater than 45° from the vertical axis without underlying material support. Bridging is the specialized process of extruding horizontal strands of molten plastic across a straight open gap between two anchor pillars without falling.
The 45-Degree Rule & Gravity Physics
In FDM 3D printing, each layer must partially overlap the layer beneath it. Overhang angles up to 45° print cleanly without support structures, whereas steep angles (60°–80°) require high part-cooling airflow and reduced print speeds.
Slicer Bridging Settings & Fan Speeds
When a slicer detects a bridge, it activates dedicated bridging logic: boosting part-cooling fans to 100%, reducing print speed (e.g. 20–30 mm/s), and slightly dropping the flow rate to stretch the molten strand tight like a guitar string across the gap.
