Auto Bed Leveling (ABL) is an automated printer calibration system that uses physical probes (e.g. BLTouch, inductive sensors, strain gauges, eddy current coils, or micro-switches) to map topographical height variations across the build plate and compensate in real-time.

How Mesh Bed Leveling Operates

Before starting a print, the printer probes a grid of coordinates (e.g. 5x5 or 7x7 points) across the build plate. The firmware calculates a mathematical height matrix (mesh) and micro-adjusts the Z-axis stepper motors in real-time while printing to maintain a constant layer height across uneven surfaces.

Sensor Technologies: Strain Gauge vs Optical vs Eddy Current

Early printers used physical deployable pins (BLTouch) or inductive metal sensors. Modern high-speed machines like Bambu Lab and Prusa MK4 employ nozzle-integrated piezoelectric strain gauges or high-frequency eddy current coils that tap the nozzle tip directly onto the sheet, eliminating manual Z-offset calibration entirely.
