The Y-axis motion system drives either the heated build plate (in Cartesian bedslingers) or the gantry carriage (in CoreXY and Delta printers) forward and backward. A Y-axis layer shift is a mechanical failure where coordinates become displaced mid-print due to physical collisions, loose belt pulleys, or stepper motor stalls.

A sudden horizontal displacement in a print indicates a layer shift. Common culprits include loose timing belt tension, grub screws backing out of the motor pulley gear, nozzle collisions with curled warped plastic, or stepper motor driver overheating.

On Cartesian "bedslinger" printers, the Y-motor must fling a heavy glass or aluminum bed back and forth. Pushing accelerations too high causes inertia to overcome motor torque, inducing skipped steps.
