Retraction is the automated mechanical action where the extruder stepper motor reverses direction during non-extrusion travel moves, pulling the solid filament upward by a set distance to release hydrostatic pressure inside the hotend melt pool.

Retraction Parameters: Distance vs Speed

Key parameters include Retraction Distance (how far filament is pulled back) and Retraction Speed (how fast the motor pulls). Tuning these values releases melt pool pressure without grinding or notching the filament.

Direct Drive vs Bowden Retraction Values

Compact direct drive extruders require small retraction distances of 0.4 mm to 1.2 mm. Conversely, Bowden setups require 4.0 mm to 7.0 mm to compensate for tube flex.

Eliminating Fine Stringing and Hotend Clogging

Setting retraction too low results in fine cobweb stringing and blobs. Setting it too high pulls hot molten plastic into the cold zone, causing immediate heat creep clogs.
